Squacco Heron (Ardeola ralloides)

I was looking down on the River Arno in Florence, Italy (August 2009) and this heron was perched on a small mound of earth in the shallows of the water's edge. A well-aimed stone plopping into the water a few metres away caused it to take off upstream allowing me to grab a shot from this fortunate angle.
